Microbiologists are positioned to play a pivotal role in developing the bioeconomy and they should use their voices to influence policy, according to a piece posted on the website of the American Society for Microbiology.

Amalia Corby, director of federal affairs for the organization, said “as policymakers, funders and the public gain awareness of bio-based technologies and products, it is incumbent upon microbiologists to communicate the fundamental role of microbes.”

Noting microbial processes are the foundation of the bioeconomy, Corby said that “As policymakers aim to carefully balance promotion and protection of the bioeconomy, data security and ever-evolving biological threats, microbiologists should have a seat at the table and play a prominent role in discussing the risks and benefits of biotechnology research, development and applications.”

In outlining some bioeconomy policy in the United States and some of the existing key spending initiatives, Corby highlighted opportunities for microbiologists to get involved.

These include communicating with the public, providing input to government agencies on biotech products without a clear regulatory path to market, promoting biosafety, provide input to the ASM on its new strategic framework, and act as a connector between disciplines and countries on global bioeconomy efforts.
