MiraCosta College, a public community college in North San Diego County, is constructing a $46.9 million chemistry and biotechnology building as it seeks to build its growing biomanufacturing program, Government Technology reported.
The school is establishing partnerships, expanding course offerings, and instituting an internship program in biotechnology.
Recently MiraCosta College’s biomanufacturing program received $1.6 million in grant funding from the National Science Foundation for building interest in biomanufacturing-related fields among women and students of color.
Since 2017, the program has generated more than $10 million in funding from government and industry partners to support its research and education efforts. The college’s Bioscience Workforce Development Hub, an initiative where students can earn credentials through work-based training in biotechnology, has played an integral role in establishing new career training opportunities for low-income and underrepresented students who are often otherwise timid about pursuing technical STEM fields like biotech.
MiraCosta’s biomanufacturing program and workforce hub are working to build industry partnerships in order to provide more hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in biotech. The school expects partnerships will play a key role in plans to increase program enrollment and participation among women, nonwhite students and low-income students.
